A tale of two land trusts

The Meyer easement with its expansive views of the Mt. Mansfield ridge is a tale of two land trusts. The Greensboro Land Trust conserved Andrew Meyer’s 21.5 agricultural acres on Bridgeman Hill and Town Farm roads in Hardwick in 1997 when it was the only land trust in the area. The parcel was too small to meet the Vermont Land Trust’s minimum acreage for a project. Increasing interest in conservation among landowners in the region prompted GLT to encourage creation of a new organization with its broader reach into neighboring towns.

An organizing committee, including GLT Chair Clive Gray, launched Northern Rivers Land Trust in 2006, and GLT transferred the Meyer conservation easement to NRLT in 2008. Upon the occasion of NRLT’s 10th anniversary, Andrew said, “Fields like this one are incredibly important to conserve not only for this generation but also for future generations. Thank you for conserving important community resources and working landscapes.”

The Meyer property joins a considerable swath of conserved acreage in the Bridgman Hill area, where VLT has been active in protecting a variety of larger parcels and the NRLT has conserved smaller easements.
